As a physician I was privileged to practice interventional cardiology for almost three decades. During my medical training I was drawn to this particular specialty because it provided excellent tools to not only to evaluate patients, but, more importantly, to quickly intervene in order to correct their problems with a high degree of success. The mindset of initially identifying a problem; evaluating it carefully; and trying to correct the problem as quickly as possibly has become deeply ingrained in my professional and personal life. Recently, I have realized that unwittingly I\u2019ve adopted this same approach since our son, Mark, was diagnosed at 18 months of age with a severe form of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).<\/span><\/p>\n After Mark\u2019s diagnosis, like so many other families, we were frustrated by the lack of funding and coordinated scientific research and worked with other advocates to establish premier academic centers such as the UC Davis MIND Institute. During the past twenty-some years, there have been remarkable breakthroughs in our understanding of the science and causes of autism. The early detection, evaluation, treatment, and medical insurance coverage for this disorder have markedly improved. Despite these noteworthy and inspiring advances, employment opportunities for autistic remain woefully lacking. Arguably, transitional services, vocational training, and competitive integrated employment are significantly lacking (some would say virtually absent) for individuals such as our son who require intensive supports and accommodations.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n During the past several years, my wife Wendy (Mark\u2019s mother) and I have focused on providing Mark with his own life that optimizes his potential for growth, independence, and self-satisfaction. A major emphasis of our endeavors has been related to finding jobs and employment for Mark. Even as I write the preceding sentence, part of my brain is saying, \u201cLou, shouldn\u2019t you be looking for jobs \u201cwith Mark; and NOT for Mark?\u201d Nothing would give me great joy and pleasure, if indeed that could be the case. Regretfully, Mark would not be a candidate to work at Microsoft or SAP. For reasons that hopefully will become evident, working at an Amazon warehouse or Walgreen\u2019s facility are well beyond his capacities and capabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Vocational training and opportunities for sustained, competitive integrated employment are (in my opinion) virtually absent for individuals such as Mark, who require intensive supports and accommodations. This problem is further intensified by recent federal and state rulings that many of the congregate settings and day programs are being phased out. Since his son, Mark, was diagnosed with autism in 1995, he has dedicated himself to issues of child development, learning differences, diversity, and access to health care for under-served populations. Lou is a founding member of the UC Davis MIND Institute, the State of California’s First Five Commission, and the California Legislative Blue Ribbon Commission on Autism . From 2000 to 2015, Lou worked as a senior policy consultant for three consecutive leaders (Senators Burton, Perata, & Steinberg) of the California Senate. Dr. Vismara established the Senate Select Committee on Autism & Related Disorders and spearheaded a variety of healthcare issues, including California’s landmark Autism Insurance Mandate (SB 946 enacted in 2011) which has the State over $200 million annually. Lou is the recipient of numerous advocacy awards and was honored by the California Senate with a resolution acknowledging his \u201clifetime achievements and meritorious service to humanity and the people of California.\u201d Dr. Vismara is currently serving as a consultant for AKT Investments, which with the UC Davis Health Systems, is seeking to establish an integrated, health-focused community for individuals of all abilities across the lifespan. Lou has also been retained by the CA Community College Chancellor\u2019s Office to establish an innovative employment\/vocational training program for neurodiverse students, which will provide services and supports for older adults. Lou has recently served as a member of the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission; UCD School of Education Advisory Board; Eskaton Senior Living Advisory Board; Friends of Sacramento Arts Board; & Meristem Board of Directors. Lou is currently employed as a consultant for AKT Investments, Inc.; and as an advisor for the Sierra College Foundation. In addition, he serves as an Adjunct Professor of medicine at Stanford University; a member of the UC Davis MIND Emeritus Board; PRIDE Industries Foundation Advisory Board; Creative Living Options Board; The Sacramento State Center for Health Practice, Policy and Research Advisory Board; & the California Statewide Education Workgroup on Alternative Pathways to A High School Diploma. Dr. Vismara is the co-author of \u201cThe Autism Full Employment Act,\u201d, a recent and highly rated book (Amazon 5 stars) that shows how there can be a place in the job world for the wide range of adults with autism, ADHD, and other learning and mental health differences\u2014many of whom are not employed today.
